Major League Soccer (MLS) club San Jose Earthquakes have agreed a partnership with Coinbase.
The deal will see the Californian side become the first in professional soccer to accept bitcoins for tickets, merchandise and concessions at their Buck Shaw Stadium home, beginning with their game against the Houston Dynamo on 25th May.
San Francisco-based Coinbase will connect the club to its bitcoin platform – which currently consists of more than 1.2 million consumer wallets, 30,000 merchants and 5,000 API applications – to allow fans to make bitcoin payments using mobile devices running its Coinbase Merchant app.
Dave Kaval, the San Jose Earthquakes president, said: “In the spirit of Silicon Valley, the Earthquakes are constantly looking for ways to innovate. Coinbase’s bitcoin payment processor adds another cutting-edge payment option that further streamlines the commerce experience for fans.”
The San Jose Earthquakes have stuttered at the start of the 2014 MLS season, with just two wins in their opening eight games.
