Timaya VS Terry G: Who Is ‘Crazier’?
This week’s Showdown! focuses on two creative and arguably ‘crazy’ artistes, Timaya and Terry G. The pair have etched their footprints in the sands of contemporary Nigerian music and are smiling to the bank, with various awards in the kitty. But who is the ‘crazier’ of the two energetic and creative performers? Find out as Timaya and Terry G go head-to-head on Showdown!
Timaya:Enetimi Alfred Odom, aka Timaya, is the CEO of Dem Mama Records and hails from Odi in Bayelsa State. He is the youngest of 15 children. Born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Timaya kick-started his career as a backup singer in Eedris Abdulkareem’s band before starting his solo career in 2006. He released his first album entitled True Story, which was a 7-tracker in 2007 and followed it up with another album, Gift and Grace in 2008. He is also a UN Peace Ambassador. Terry G:Singer and music producer, Terry G (Amanyi Oche Gabriel) was born into a music family. The Benue State indigene is the first born of a family of four. As a child, he had enormous musical influence especially from his mother who was a popular choir conductor in church. At five, he was already playing drums and soon after perfected the art of playing the piano and bass guitar. At 16, Terry G kick-started his career serving as backup singer to Faze before breaking away to release his controversial debut, Free Me. However, it was his Free Madness album that became a big hit after he featured on AY.Com’s Pass Me Your Love. …And the people’s verdict:
Timaya is crazier in real life while Terry G is crazier on stage
– Ifeyinwa Udemba, student
Terry G could get so wild on stage during live concerts; he is a delight to watch and he is capable of doing anything to capture his audience. As for Timaya, I think he is crazier in real life situations than on stage. Remember his alleged attempted attack on his former girlfriend and actress, Empress Njamah in church.
Terry G is crazier –Timothy Ezekiel, businessman
Terry G is not only crazy but wild! He always exudes immense energy while performing at concerts; he even rips off his clothes not minding the cost. Many people believe he does all that under the influence of stimulant but I think it’s just his style. After all good music intoxicates.
It’s Terry-G –MaryJane Chukwu, accountant
It’s Terry G! I watched him perform at IMT, Enugu in those days. The show was organised by Globacom. At a point he went gaga and began to strip on stage; he took off his clothes and threw them at the audience including his expensive gold necklace, wrist watch, shoes and shirt. And afterwards, he tore his singlet into pieces. Those of us watching him for the first time thought he had gone nuts. But after his session we saw him smiling away and chatting with people.
Timaya is crazier –Ken Achibong, student
Timaya is crazier both on and off the stage. But I think that their level of craziness is determined by the quantity of weed they probably smoke before mounting the stage. However, Terry G can go terribly gaga on stage.
Terry-G, the craziest living Nigerian musician –Ras Damian, musician
I love Terry G. He is the craziest among Nigerian musicians alive. There is no dull moment with him and he could go 24-hours- non-stop on stage. Some people say its stimulant that keeps him going but I ask the question, ‘who can go for even two hours on stage with all the smoke and drugs on earth?’ I give it to Terry G.
Size not a barrier for Timaya –Yetunde Ogooluwa, student
Timaya is a crazy stage performer. His size doesn’t pose any barrier to him. He sings well and dances well too. And that is why he is one of the hottest and busiest among the present crop of Nigerian artistes.
Terry G is the one –Nike Odunayo, Youth Corps member
I think Terry G is crazier than Timaya. But I only know about stage performance which is more like acting. I have watched both acts at concerts so for me Terry G is the one to beat. However, I cannot tell about real life situations.
Terry G is weird – Lola Makinwa, student
Terry G is crazy and weird inside out. You shouldn’t even compare Timaya with him. Terry G could be referred to as Charly Boy Junior. He’s just like Charly Boy whose father, late Justice Oputa once described as his direct opposite, I learnt that Terry is as well nice, cool-headed and a delight to be with; he is only being unique.
Terry G’s madness is contagious
– Linda Chukwuocha, businesswoman
Terry G is crazier! I have watched him severally and I have also watched Timaya too. Terry’s madness is contagious. Once he goes gaga on stage he infects the audience. And I think that is the reason why he has such a strong followership.
I find Timaya more interesting –Kennedy Iweh, computer engineer
From live performances of both acts that I’ve watched I have found Timaya more interesting compared to Terry G. Timaya carries the audience along better than Terry G does. I think Terry G usually gets too wild and carried away which tends to scare the audience.
