Jonathan Nominates Shekarau, Adeyeye, 2 Others As Ministers
President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday forwarded the names of former Kano State governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau and a former Afenifere spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye as ministers to the Senate for consideration.
Also nominated as ministers are Dr. Abdul Bulama from Yobe State and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-South zonal Vice Chairman, Dr. Stephen Oruh.
Senate President David Mark read the names of the nominees yesterday at the plenary.
President Jonathan’s letter to the Senate reads: “In accordance with Section 147 sub-section 2 of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, I have the honour to forward the under-listed ministerial nominees for consideration for Senate confirmation.
“Dr. Abdul Bulama, Yobe State; Dr. Stephen Oruh, Delta State; Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau Kano State; and Prince Adedayo Adeyeye, Ekiti State.
“It is my hope that this exercise will receive the usual kind expeditious consideration of the distinguished members of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
The president also attached the curriculum vitae of the nominees in the letter. As the Senate president read the letter to senators, Shekarau’s nomination elicited a loud murmur in the chamber.
The former governor of Kano State dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the ruling PDP recently, effectively shutting out Hajia Jamilia Salik, who had earlier been nominated by the president to fill the Kano State’s slot. She was among the 12 ministerial nominees forwarded to the Senate for confirmation by President Jonathan in January but she was not screened for the job even though she was physically present.
Three of the four ministerial nominees would fill the gap created by the exit of the former minister of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Elder Godsday Orubebe (Delta), the Minister of Police Affairs, Caleb Olubolade (Ekiti), and Minister of State for Finance, Yerima Ngama (Yobe).
With the latest nomination, Kwara and Anambra states are yet to get ministerial nominees to fill the slots of their states following the removal of Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi from Kwara State as Sports Minister in March this year and that of Princess Stella Oduah, former Aviation Minister from Anambra State.
