Eaglets Get CAF Lifeline
.Bassey hails decision
African football governing body, CAF yesterday gave Emmanuel Amuneke tutored Golden Eaglets a lifeline to remain in the race for next year’s African U-17 championships, with the postponement by one week of its qualifier against DR Congo.CAF in shifting the match, which was initially billed to hold this weekend to next week did so in a bid to see the Nigerian football crisis resolved. Had CAF stuck to the original date then the Eaglets would have been out of the championship since FIFA as at press time was yet to officially notify Cairo that the ban placed on Nigerian football had been lifted.
CAF disclosed yesterday that Nigeria, DR Congo game earlier scheduled for Lubumbashi on Sunday July 20, 2014 will now hold on July 27, 2014.
In a letter to the Nigeria Football Federation, the Federation Congolaise de Football Association and the match officials, the continent’s football ruling body declared that it was granting the grace of seven days with high hopes that the suspension on Nigeria would be lifted in a couple of days.
CAF’s letter stated in part: “Following the suspension of Nigeria Football Federation by FIFA few days ago, please be informed that CAF is hopeful that an end to this crisis will be found soon.
“However, in view of the upcoming match scheduled between DR Congo and Nigeria U-17 national teams on July 20th, 2014 in Lubumbashi, we wish to ensure that the African youth players maintain their chance of playing competitive football for their respective countries.
“As such, please be informed that CAF decided to postpone the above mentioned match from July 20th to July 27th, 2014.”
Meanwhile Nigeria’s seasoned sports journalist and a member of the CAF media committee Mr Paul Bassey had hailed the decision. Bassey told Daily Sunsports that it would have been a disaster if the Golden Eaglets had been thrown out of the championship at a time when normalcy is returning to Nigerian football.
“CAF deserves a pat on the back for taking that decision. It clearly shows how important Nigeria is in the African football family,” Bassey said.
