Food Vendor Electrocuted In Akwa Ibom
A 32-year-old food vendor and
mother of three, Mrs. Uwana Bright, was on Wednesday electrocuted by a
fallen Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company cable around
4.27am in front of the 20th Anniversary Hospital, along Uyo-Ikot Ekpene
Road, Itam, Itu Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.
Until her death, Bright with her two children, Isaiah Bright, 12, and Daniel Bright, nine excluding Bright, 15, lived at 65, Ikot Idaha Road, Ekit Itam, Itu. Bright was said to be the breadwinner for her family.
Sympathisers who spoke with our correspondent, said there was an electric spark following the fallen PHEDC cable late Tuesday night, but fire service personnel arrived the scene almost immediately and put out the fire.
Bright, unaware of the development, was said to have gone to the area to urinate after she had finished cooking when she stepped on the live cable.
A witness and fellow food vendor, Anthony Obot, said when Bright had finished cooking, she rushed out to urinate so that she would quickly come back and attend to her customers (workers at the 20th Anniversary Hospital) who were at the selling point waiting for her.
He said, “The PHEDC cable, which does not connect light to anywhere, came down. We noticed fire as the cable fell on the grass. It was not all that long; the fire service personnel came with their truck and put out the fire.
“People thought the PHEDC had also switched off the power. When it was in the morning of Wednesday, we all came to our selling point to cook for the hospital workers. We finished cooking few minutes passed 4 o’clock on Wednesday morning.
“Bright went out to urinate so that she would be able to attend to customers who were already beginning to wait for her at the selling point.
“About 15 minutes after she left to urinate, we did not see her. We started wondering what might have happened to her. When we went to the place she went to urinate, we saw that she had been burnt to death by the fallen cable.”
A sister to Bright, Mrs. Idongesit Edem, said she was in the church when she received a phone call that her sister had died.
She explained that she was devastated by the news because her sister was not sick so. She stated that most of the food her sister sold to the workers was on credit.
She added that Bright’s husband, whose name the sister did not know, sent her (Bright) out of his house in Lagos with the two children who were then three months old and the other two and a half years old.
She added that since that time her sister had been fending for the family.
Her landlord, Mr. Mark Okon, said Bright had been living in his house since January 2013. He noted that Bright paid rent for two years, which will expire in January 2015.
At the time our correspondent called at the PHEDC office to meet the Business Manager, Mr. Akeem Dahunsi, for comments on the incident, Dahunsi was said not to be on seat by his receptionist.
There was no other person to speak to as information and enlightenment department in the organisation, was no longer operational.
But the Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Mr. Etim Dickson, confirmed the incident.
He said the police had called the attention of the PHEDC to the area to forestall further loss of life.
He said, “The police are aware and have taken the corpse to mortuary. The woman went to urinate and stepped on the fallen PHEDC live cable.
“The attention of the PHEDC has been drawn to the incident. We do not want to lose any other person again.”
