Mother Of Three Shot Dead, Another Injured In Abeokuta

A police escort attached to the member of All Progressives Congress (APC), candidate for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Segun Williams, has shot dead a mother of two and also injured a young man in Erunbe community in Ago – Oko area of Abeokuta. It was learnt that the National Assembly member had gone to the community with his supporters for a re-election campaign when the incident happened. The woman identified as Taiwo, and popularly called Mama Ola, was in her kiosk where she sells petty items when the bullets from Williams’ escort’s gunshot cut short her life. Daily Independent visited the woman’s kiosk in the community and observed patches of blood splattered on the gutter in front of her shop when she fell down upon being hit by bullets. Her 16-year-old daughter, Halimat, who is in Junior Secondary School Class One, while speaking amidst sobs, added that she was in the shop with her mother and was assisting to pack some bunches of banana when she began to hear people shouting “ Iya Ola, Iya Ola.” Continuing, Halimat said upon turning in her mother’s direction, she saw her fell on the floor in front of the shop. The other victim of the gunshot, a young man, and whose face was caught by bullets, is said to have been taken to the Catholic Hospital, Lantoro, where doctors are battling to save his life. According to a witness, the bullets injured his two eyes while he was said to have died on the way to the same Catholic hospital. Also, Ogun state police command and the leadership of the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have differed over the abduction of four councillors from Ijebu North East local government area of the state who were allegedly arrested by men of the Nigeria Police. While the state leadership of the PDP accused the police of abducting the four councillors elected on the platform of the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) apparently to block their defection to the PDP, the state police command has however, denied knowledge of arrest of any political office holder in the local council area. Speaking with journalists at Ijebu-Igbo, the PDP South West chairman of the Organisation and Mobilisation Committee, Buruji Kashamu, stated on Thursday that 100 of the 236 councillors across the 20 local government areas of the state had recently held a meeting with the PDP where plans for their defection to the party were perfected. Kashamu said the defection was to be done in batches starting with five councillors from Ijebu North East. He explained that the councillors which included Dele Talabi, Rufus Oredega, Adisa Rosanwo and Tunde Ajayi were however, rounded up at Ogbogbo on their way to Atan, the headquarters of their local government by eight policemen who claimed they were acting “on orders from the above”. On the efforts to get the men released, Kashamu said he had already phone the Inspector General of Police but could not get through to him because the state is yet to get a new Commissioner of Police. But reacting to the allegation of abduction by the police, the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi told journalists that he was yet to get the information.
