Arsenal line up two defenders as Star faces lengthy injury lay off

Mertesacker was injured during Arsenal’s pre-season friendly on Friday against Lens and will not join his team mates on the tour of America. The north-London club are, according to reports, interested in both Fabian Schar of Hoffenheim and Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi.
Central defence has been a problem position in recent years for Arsenal and a player like Schar or Mustafi would provide decent competition for the players already at the club.
Schar impressed for Switzerland during Euro 2016 and the 24-year old was been in fine form last season for Hoffenheim since moving from FC Basel in 2015.

However, Germany defender Mustafi would provide more experience than Schar having already played for a Premier League club with Everton and appeared over 100 times in Serie A and La Liga.
Defenders already at the club including Gabriel and Calum Chambers have failed to really impress since joining the Emirates and back up from either Schar or Mustafi would be ideal.
