The centre back began his career with FC Bebra, before a brief stint with SV Rotenburg saw him eventually join Hamburg’s youth side. In 2009, Shkodran left his homeland to sign for Everton. After progressing through the Toffees’ youth system, the defender went onto to make one appearance under manager David Moyes.

Shkodran wasn’t initially included in Joachim Low's squad for Brazil, but was called up to replace the injured Marco Reus. The triumph wasn’t the defender’s first in a Germany shirt, having already won the Under-17 European Championship before going on to feature at every level of the national side.
Shkodran was in action at the 2016 European Championship, and scored Germany’s first goal of the tournament in a 2-0 win against Ukraine. The defender helped his country reach the semi-finals, before being defeated by hosts France.
