The Federal Road Safety Corps said in Abuja on Monday that about 115 road crashes were recorded nationwide during the Easter celebration.
The corps said the figure was low due to the special patrol embarked upon by its operatives between April 1 and April 8, 2015.
The patrol, according to a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Imoh Etuk, made it possible to reduce road accident by 17 per cent when compared to that of last year when 139 accidents were recorded.
Etuk said the FRSC also recorded 25 per cent reduction in the number of vehicles involved in road crashes within the period.
He said 172 vehicles were involved in accidents compared to 230 vehicles in 2014.
He also said the FRSC achieved 13 per cent reduction in the number of people involved in road crashes in the 2015 Easter celebration, adding that the number was 885 persons against the 2014 figure of 1,012.
Details of the 2015 Easter fatality figures, according to him, indicated that while 85 deaths were recorded in 2015, the 2014 Easter period posted 80 deaths, translating to five per cent increase.
He said, “On injuries, 463 casualties were recorded this year while 451 persons were injured in 2014, representing 10 per cent increase.
“The FRSC arraigned 23 traffic offenders in mobile courts out of which 20 offenders were convicted while 1,388 offenders were arrested for 8,625 traffic-related offences during the 2015 festive season.”
Etuk also added that failure to use seat belt by motorists was most prevalent with 2,194 offenders, followed by riding without safety helmet which recorded 1,013 offenders, while tyre violation accounted for 1,040 offenders.
He said, “Similarly, speed limit violation accounted for most of the road traffic crashes during the period with 44 cases, followed by loss of control with 29 cases and wrongful overtaking accounting for 12 road crashes.”
He said, “The reduction in road crashes and traffic offences is a fall-out of the corps’ massive deployment of personnel and logistics along critical corridors.”
“About 455 patrol vehicles, 66 Ambulances, 102 motorcycles, 12 tow trucks and over 34,000 personnel were deployed in states for Easter patrol in addition to robust public enlightenment campaigns.
Etuk stated that the FRSC got improved collaboration from relevant stakeholders during the exercise, appealing to road users to ensure strict compliance with traffic rules and regulations.
